Cold & Flu Treatment
Cold & Flu Treatment
When You're Sick, Reach Your Own Doctor, Not a Crowded Waiting Room
Same-day, physician-led cold and flu care for adults across Illinois, by phone, video, or in person, so you get the right diagnosis and treatment fast.
When a cold or the flu hits, you already feel terrible. The last thing you want is to drag yourself to a packed urgent care, sit in a waiting room full of other sick people, or face an emergency room where the wait can stretch past five hours.
- Same-Day & Next-Day Visits
- No Copays, No Insurance Hassle
- Triple Board-Certified Physician
So most people do one of two things. They tough it out and hope it passes, or they wait until they feel awful enough to justify the trip, by which point the most effective treatments may already be less useful.
There is a better way. At Sina Medical Direct Primary Care, you can reach your own physician the same day you feel sick, often without leaving home. Under the care of Dr. Ali, you get a real diagnosis and the right treatment quickly, from a doctor who already knows your health.
Feeling under the weather should be simple to handle. We make it that way.
Getting Seen Shouldn't Be the Hard Part
For most people, the problem with cold and flu care is not the illness. It is the hassle of being seen.
Urgent care means a trip and a wait when you can barely get off the couch. The emergency room means hours among strangers and a bill to match. And a regular doctor's office often cannot fit you in for days, long after it would have helped most.
Worse, wherever you end up, you usually see whoever happens to be available, a provider who has never met you, does not know your history, and has every reason to move quickly to the next patient.
That rushed model leads to two common mistakes. Some people get sent home without the testing that would have caught the flu in time for treatment to work. Others get handed antibiotics for a virus that antibiotics cannot touch, just to end the visit.
Cold and flu care should be fast, accurate, and personal. It rarely is.
Cold, Flu, or Something Else? Why the Right Diagnosis Matters
Coughing, fever, sore throat, body aches, congestion. The symptoms of a cold, the flu, COVID-19, and even strep throat can look almost identical from the outside. Telling them apart is what decides the right treatment.
A common cold is usually mild and clears on its own with rest, fluids, and time. Antibiotics do nothing for it, because it is caused by a virus.
The flu is more serious. It comes on fast and hits harder, and it can lead to complications, especially for older adults, pregnant women, and anyone with a condition like asthma, COPD, or diabetes. When the flu is caught early, antiviral treatment can shorten and ease it, but it works best when started within the first day or two. That is exactly why fast access matters.
Strep throat and some sinus and chest infections are bacterial, and those genuinely may need antibiotics. The only way to know is a proper evaluation, sometimes with a quick test.
Knowing which illness you actually have, and treating it correctly, is the whole point. That takes a physician, not a guess.
How Sina Handles Cold & Flu Care
At Sina Medical Direct Primary Care, getting care when you are sick is straightforward. You reach your physician directly, the same day, by message, phone, or video. Many cold and flu visits are handled entirely from home.
Dr. Ali is a triple board-certified physician in Internal Medicine, Obesity Medicine, and Lifestyle Medicine. When you are sick, that means you are seen by a doctor who knows your full health history, including any ongoing conditions that could make an illness riskier. If testing for flu, COVID, or strep would help, it is arranged. If treatment is needed, it is started quickly. If antibiotics will not help, you will be told honestly, and given a plan that actually will.
Because your care is connected, if a simple cold turns into something more, the same physician follows through, rather than starting over with a stranger.
What We Treat
Our same-day care covers the common illnesses that send people to urgent care, without the trip.
The common cold
- Congestion, sore throat, cough, and fatigue, with guidance on relief and on when it needs more attention.
Influenza (the flu)
- Fever, body aches, and exhaustion, with rapid testing and early antiviral treatment when appropriate.
COVID-19
- Testing, guidance, and treatment, including for those at higher risk.
Sore throat and strep
- Evaluation and testing to find out whether antibiotics are truly needed.
Sinus infections
- Sorting out whether your congestion is viral or a bacterial infection that needs treatment.
Cough and bronchitis
- Assessment of lingering or worsening coughs to rule out something more serious.
Illness on top of a chronic condition
- Extra care when a cold or flu lands on top of asthma, COPD, diabetes, or another condition that raises your risk.
How It Works
Reach Out the Same Day
When you feel sick, contact your physician directly. No waiting days for an appointment and no sitting in a crowded clinic.
Get Evaluated
Often by phone or video from home, your doctor reviews your symptoms and history. If a flu, COVID, or strep test would help, it is arranged.
Start the Right Treatment
You get a clear diagnosis and a treatment plan matched to what you actually have, whether that is supportive care, an antiviral, or an antibiotic only when one is truly needed.
Follow Up If Needed
If your symptoms drag on or get worse, the same physician stays with you and adjusts the plan, so nothing falls through the cracks.
When It Is More Than a Cold
Most colds and flu can be handled at home, but some symptoms need urgent attention. Seek emergency care or call 911 for trouble breathing or shortness of breath, chest pain or pressure, confusion, a high fever that will not come down, signs of dehydration, or symptoms that suddenly get much worse. When in doubt, reaching your physician quickly helps you decide which path to take.

Frequently Asked Questions
How fast can I be seen?
The same day. You reach your physician directly by message, phone, or video, with no waiting days for an appointment.
Do I have to come in?
Often not. Many cold and flu visits are handled entirely from home by phone or video. We arrange an in-person visit or testing only when it would help.
Can you tell whether it is a cold, the flu, or COVID?
Yes. The symptoms overlap, so your physician evaluates you and, when useful, arranges rapid testing to find out exactly what you have.
Will I get antibiotics?
Only if you need them. Colds and flu are viral, and antibiotics do not help with viruses. We use antibiotics when there is a true bacterial infection, and explain honestly when there is not.
Is the flu really worth seeing a doctor for?
It can be. The flu can be serious, and early antiviral treatment works best within the first day or two, so seeing your physician quickly can make a real difference.
What if I have asthma, COPD, or diabetes?
Then a cold or flu carries more risk, and fast care matters even more. Because we know your history, we watch for complications and treat accordingly.
Can you advise on the rest of my household?
We focus on the care of our members, and your physician can advise on when others in your household should be seen as well.
Do I need insurance?
No. Our Direct Primary Care model does not require insurance, and same-day illness visits are included in your membership with no extra per-visit fee.
When should I go to the emergency room instead?
For trouble breathing, chest pain, confusion, severe dehydration, or symptoms that rapidly worsen, seek emergency care or call 911. For most other symptoms, reach your physician first.
Can you manage this virtually across Illinois?
Yes. Our telemedicine care is available across Illinois, so you can be seen wherever you are in the state.
